The Climate Impact and Risk Assessment project, implemented by Wedo Consulting in partnership with the University of Duhok for Welthungerhilfe (WHH), aimed to evaluate the current and future climate risks affecting Iraq’s water, agriculture, and socio-economic sectors. The project focused on five governorates — Basra, Kirkuk, Diyala, Thi-Qar, and Anbar — regions most vulnerable to environmental stress and resource conflicts.
The assessment combined field research, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement to deliver actionable strategies for enhancing climate resilience and reducing vulnerabilities across communities and sectors.
Approach & Activities
Conducted a nationwide climate impact assessment using a mixed-methods approach, including:
Developed analytical frameworks for quantitative, qualitative, spatial, and temporal data analysis.
Mapped key climate vulnerabilities affecting agriculture, water resources, and socio-economic stability.
Designed region-specific mitigation strategies for short-, medium-, and long-term interventions.
Conducted stakeholder validation workshops and produced policy recommendations to guide sustainable water and agriculture management.
Integrated Monitoring and Evaluation frameworks to support adaptive management and track climate resilience outcomes.
Impact
The project provided evidence-based insights for decision-makers, NGOs, and policymakers, highlighting the urgent need for integrated water governance, sustainable agriculture, and socio-economic resilience. It established a baseline for climate vulnerability mapping in Iraq and developed strategic pathways to strengthen community and institutional adaptive capacities against climate change.
