The Climate-Sensitive and Green Economy Market Needs Assessment was implemented by Wedo Consulting for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Human Relief Foundation (HRF). The project aimed to identify sustainable, climate-resilient livelihood and business opportunities for vulnerable groups, including youth, returnees, women, and persons with disabilities, across six districts in Anbar (Ramadi, Rawah, Anah), Salah Al-Din (Tikrit), Kirkuk, and Ninewa (Mosul).
Through extensive field research, stakeholder consultations, and data analysis, the assessment mapped market needs, skill gaps, and institutional challenges in Iraq’s emerging green economy — providing a strategic roadmap for inclusive, sustainable livelihood programming.
Approach & Activities
Conducted quantitative and qualitative research including surveys, 38 Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and 6 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs).
Analyzed regional trends in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, recycling, eco-tourism, and waste management.
Identified training and employment gaps within Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centers.
Mapped key stakeholders from local authorities, private sector, civil society, and academic institutions.
Delivered region-specific recommendations to establish inclusive green skills centers, mobile training platforms, and entrepreneurship pathways.
Developed cross-cutting strategies for gender inclusion, social reintegration of returnees, and participation of persons with disabilities.
Impact
The assessment provided a comprehensive evidence base to guide UNDP and HRF’s green economy programming in post-conflict regions of Iraq. It outlined actionable steps to expand vocational training, stimulate private-sector partnerships, and promote climate-sensitive livelihoods. The findings continue to support policy design, donor planning, and program implementation focused on Iraq’s transition toward an inclusive green economy.
